The 20-year old Latvian produced a sublime display of tennis as she fought back to win her first Grand Slam title at the French Open.
Ostapenko was unseeded and had never played in the final of a Grand Slam before, but she seemed at home as she broke Simona Halep’s serve in the very first game. However, some unforced errors began to creep into her game, and she eventually went down a set and 3-0.
Halep had chances to make her advantage 4-0 in the second set, but the Latvian came charging back, winning the second set, before taking the third by breaking the Romanian’s service twice, including the final game, where Ostapenko produced a down-the-line backhand to seal her astounding victory on the parisian clay.
Jelena Ostapenko said after the match: “I cannot believe I am champion at 20 years old,” adding that “I have no words, it is my dream. I’m so happy.”
Despite losing to the world number 47, Simona Halep added praise on the young Latvian, telling her that it was “an amazing thing”. She added that Ostapenko must “Keep it going” as “you [Jelena] are only a kid,”
